Talk Therapy Did Not Resolve It Entirely For You? - Somatic Therapy and Focusing May Be The Answer

You have talked about it, mentalised it, gone over and over the narrative, you get it intellectually, cognitively, you know you are smart! You understand the why's, and the shouldn'ts. You tell yourself you know what's best for you, you even journal about it, you also blocked him on socials twice, and after all that talk and intention, it takes you by surprise, just when you thought you had it sorted, the triggers, the compulsion, that irresistible attachment, that knot in the stomach, the mental hijacking, the shallow breathing, the mind loops, are back, again, and it's hurting you.

You know that relationship is no longer serving you.

You understand why you react the way you do.

You can explain your patterns, your fears, your struggles.

And yet, despite the cognitive understanding, the same feelings return, and it controls you.

And when you realise that trauma lives in the body, that the event is already gone, but what you have embedded in your nervous system are neurological highways that pulsate messages of protection because that's what helped you survive then. When you feel it in your body and tend to those neural pathways from a somatic experience stance, cultivating new awareness, safety, updating the program, you then start to allow that deep change, the compulsions drop, new circuits come online, there's a letting go by empowerment and deep knowing of Self and self-regulation and agency on your experience. You become the observer, the designer and the story-teller. You gain your true rhythm back.
Healing and Change Backed by Neuroscience
Somatic therapy is founded on a simple yet profound understanding and neuroscience backs it up: Yes our thoughts, narratives and emotions are part of how we experience life, but the body is where meaning, emotion, agency and ultimately the best version of ourselves can really be felt. Every piece of meaningful experience, triumphs and disappointments, loss and grief, achievements, attachments, heartbreaks, transitions, and moments of belonging leaves an imprint within us on the body. The body learns alongside the mind. It adapts, protects, remembers, contracts, opens, withdraws, reaches, braces and softens.

Sometimes these adaptations continue long after the original circumstances have passed.

You may notice this as anxiety that arrives without clear explanation. A sense of overwhelm despite having a relatively stable life. Difficulty trusting. A recurring feeling of disconnection from your emotions, your relationships, or your sense of purpose or orientation.

These experiences are not signs that something is wrong with you.

They are communications from parts of yourself that have not yet been fully heard or integrated.

In somatic therapy, we slow down enough to listen and feel the parts in us that are wounded. We cultivate interoception and somatic awareness. We get closer to the wounded parts, listen to them, hold space to them and negotiate with their protectors to nurture safe access and a new relationship to be able to begin and shift the neurological stressors, while being resourced and empowered with tolerance and fresh scope.

Rather than focusing and circulating the past stories, analysis, or problem-solving, we begin exploring the subtle language of embodied experience. We become curious about sensations, impulses, emotions, gestures, imagery, breath, and the felt sense that lives beneath words and thoughts.

Neurons That Fire Together Wire Together
What happens in your body when you speak about a particular memory?

What changes in your body when you imagine a future possibility?

Where do you feel expansion?

Where do you feel contraction?

Where does your body already know the next step before your mind catches up?

These questions are not asked to diagnose or fix. They are invitations into a deeper relationship with yourself.

Over time, my clients discover that beneath stuckness, anxiety, shame and other challenging emotions, there may be a longing for safety. Beneath burnout or exhaustion, there is a part that has been carrying too much for too long. Beneath self-criticism, a protective strategy developed years ago in an attempt to be accepted, get in line, or survive.

As awareness develops, so too does choice.

The body begins to experience new possibilities.

The nervous system learns that it no longer needs to remain organised around old patterns. Greater flexibility emerges. More space becomes available for creativity, connection, resilience and authentic expression. New dreams emerge.
Somatic Therapy, Counselling & Coaching Sessions with Elijah on Zoom
One of the beautiful aspects of somatic counselling is that it translates remarkably well online.

Through Zoom, we are able to work with bodily awareness, breath, sensation, movement, imagery, mindfulness, parts work and nervous system regulation practices. Many clients find that engaging in sessions from the familiarity of their own home allows them to feel more relaxed, grounded and open to exploration.

I work with individuals experiencing anxiety, burnout, life transitions, emotional overwhelm, attachment challenges, trauma-related experiences, relational challenges, personal growth journeys, and those simply seeking a deeper connection with themselves and their body.

You do not need to have a crisis to begin therapy.

Sometimes the invitation is much quieter than that.

A sense that there is more of you waiting to emerge.

A feeling that life could be lived with greater ease.

A curiosity about what becomes possible when you stop fighting yourself and begin listening.

If this resonates with you, I invite you to connect with me today.

Together we can explore what brings you here, whether somatic counselling feels aligned for you, and how we can co-create a new pathway for you.

Healing begins with awareness.
When we turn inward and listen to the parts in us that has been present within all along.
